GRADUATION!!!.... then what?

Okay, so you’re a senior in your last semester at college. Unfortunately you were not at the head of your class (or the tail), you do not have 5 job opportunities or 10 Grad Schools lining up to welcome you in, and you do not have a 5 million.0 GPA.

Welcome to the club. After a long and grueling 3.5 years I have finally entered my last semester of college and the question that seems to linger on every darn person's tongue is, “So what are you doing after graduation?” At this point I consider my audience carefully. For my professors its “I am currently refining my list of graduate schools.” For my family its “I am looking for a job in my field.” For my friends “Backpacking through Europe.” In reality I have absolutely no clue.

Now the concept of not knowing where the road led after I removed my cap and gown and framed my diploma is no doubt terrifying. Everyone seemed to have it all figured out. Am I missing something? Every option before me seemed like someone else’s decision for my life. This had me under the weather until I had an enlightening conversation with my cousin. She is currently finishing up her residency at a Philadelphia hospital. Our talk started with the age-old question about my future plans. I decided this time I’d go with the truth. She then told me something I thought was worth sharing. She said, “ you have already made the most important decision, and that was to go to college. Stop being afraid of making the wrong choice. Go with your gut and you will end up exactly where you need to be.”

I realized then that I wasn’t scared about not knowing what to do, I was scared that I would choose the wrong thing to do. It’s amazing how much thinking space you free up in your mind when you choose to let go of clutter like fear of the unknown. Needless to say I still have no freaking idea of what I’m going to do after graduation…. But for now, I’m ok with that…
