Rivers, Woods and Water Pistols (Camping at Ochlockonee)

So this weekend we decided that we'd take a break from the all the concrete buildings, paved roads, and noisy neighborhoods, and head out into the woods for a bit of R&R. The Ochlockonee River State Park (pronounced Uck-lock-oh-nee) is  about 50 minutes outside of Tallahassee, Fl. Much of the area is in the St. Marks Wildlife Refuge. The Ochlockonee river drains into the Gulf of Mexico and is as serene and placid at night as it is vibrant and full of life during the day. The campsites are near the river bank, providing easy access for swimming, boating and canoeing. Now this isn't a primitive campsite so there was a showering station a short distance away and electrical outlets nearby. It's a really nice place to spend a weekend, or weeklong, trip with friends and family.

After setting up our tent we decided to check out the area. There is a 2 mile hiking trail that loops the area. It's a very easy trail through Pine trees.

The trail loops right back to the river bank and provides a nice view of the water.

Be sure to take a moment to enjoy the view!

Now you can't possibly see such a great view of the water and not want to jump right in! So that's exactly what we did! Some swimsuits, a couple super soakers and a more than sufficient supply of water was exactly what we needed to end the day.

So all that fun tends to work up an appetite! At the campsite there are designated fire pits and the ranger station has firewood for sale for about $5. Camping isn't camping without s'mores! So if firewood isn't readily available to you, you can always grab some at the ranger station. The rangers are usually there from 8am-5pm everyday.

So we missed the memo about firewood and had to improvise with charcoal.

So for food potatoes wrapped in aluminum foil placed in the coals are delicious! Also corn on the cob and hotdogs are easy great tasting treats for camping. And of course there's S'mores!!

Just because it's nighttime doesn't mean you have to stay in your tent! We took a cool walk down to the riverbank in the moonlight.

Don't forget to get up in time to catch the sunrise on the river as well. Trust me it's worth it!
