DIY: Lace Shorts

The madness before the masterpiece

Hey guys,

So even though EMF was totally awesome there was a huge regret that I had. When Greyhound couldn't find my bag it meant that I had lost a very important article of clothing, my DIY lace shorts. Months before the festival when my friends and I were debating on what outfits to bring, I stumbled upon the idea for a lace skirt/shorts on Pinterest. Imagine my happiness when I was able to find a quick no-sew (well for her not really for me) tutorial. Here's the deal

What you need:

Cotton shorts
White thread
Fabric glue (washable)
Lace
Sponge

How to make:

So first choose a pair of cotton shorts, the stretchy kind that you can wear causally. I got mine at Walmart for around $5.00. Although the pair I got was white to match the lace, I also bought a neon pink pair for a later idea of lace shorts with a bright background.

So lay the pants flat on the table/ground/flat surface, and try to make sure its as wrinkle free as possible.

Then take the lace and cut a piece the length of the bottom of the shorts (starting from the bottom makes having a fringe easier). Leave a little extra to account for folding over

Lay down a line of fabric glue where the top of the lace is going to lay and put the lace on top. Then take the sponge and dip in into the fabric glue and go over the top of the lace for extra security.

Now the layering of the lace completely depends on you. My first attempt I had them laying really close together and ran through almost two rolls of lace before finishing one side of the shorts. So I chose to space them a little further apart but still keep some overlap to avoid seeing the clothe of the shorts.
This was actually a little too far for me so I made the overlap larger later on
Continue the layering and gluing all the way up the shorts on both sides. Once one full side of the shorts is down allow them to dry. I personally like to put a heavy book on the opposite side to increase the pressure or you can blow dry the lace if your in a hurry.

Do the other side
After the lace is mostly dry, take the thread and fold over the extra edges (especially around the crotch area) and sew them to the shorts. I also chose to sew some of the edges just for extra security. And TA-DAA you've got yourself one fabulous pair of lace shorts.

Omi helped at this point because I was packing

Again super bummed about not being able to wear them out to Essence, but maybe I'll find something to wear them with.... *hint hint universe*

Alright later guys!!
Oh by the way, Here is the link to the original tutorial
